Frost’s Descent

Frost’s Descent

「停车坐爱枫林晚,霜叶红于二月花。」

Solar Term Begins: 2026-10-23 – 2026-10-24
Frost’s Descent is the final chapter of autumn. The weather grows steadily colder and the first frosts begin to appear. By this point, the autumn harvest is largely complete: rice has been stored in the granaries and fruits and melons put away…
Temperature Trends
Cold piercing the bones

Temperatures fall markedly. Across most of China, average daily temperatures drop below 10°C, while many northern regions fall to around 0–5°C. Widespread nighttime frost begins to appear, Northeast China has already entered winter, and the chill becomes increasingly severe.

Precipitation Patterns
Dry and cold

Precipitation remains generally low across the country. The autumn rains of western China come fully to an end, the north turns cold and dry, autumn dryness deepens in the south, and rainfall approaches its lowest level of the year.

一
Jackals Display Their Prey

Carnivorous animals such as jackals hunt extensively during Frost’s Descent and arrange their prey on the ground as though making an offering to Heaven. In reality, this is an instinctive behavior through which animals store food and accumulate energy in preparation for the harsh winter.

二
Plants Yellow and Fall

In deep autumn, as temperatures continue to fall, the leaves of grasses and trees turn from green to yellow, then from yellow to withered brown before drifting to the ground. The earth becomes a field of gold, and the desolate beauty of late autumn reaches its fullest expression.

三
Hibernating insects remain hidden

Hibernating insects sense that winter is approaching and retreat into dormancy, lowering themselves, ceasing to eat or move, and waiting in the deepest stillness for spring to awaken them once again.

「水调歌头 · 霜降碧天静」

[Song Dynasty] · Ye Mengde

霜降碧天静,秋事促西风。

寒声隐地初听,中夜入梧桐。

起瞰高城回望,寥落关河千里,一醉与君同。

叠鼓闹清晓,飞骑引雕弓。

Modern Translation

At Frost’s Descent, the blue sky is washed clear and Heaven and Earth lie in stillness; the west wind grows urgent, hastening the affairs of autumn toward their end. At first, a faint sound of cold seems to rise from beneath the earth; by midnight, it enters the leaves of the parasol trees. I rise and look down from the high city walls, turning to gaze across all directions: for a thousand li, passes and rivers lie desolate. Let me drink myself drunk together with you. At dawn, layered drums resound noisily, and mounted riders gallop forth, drawing their carved bows in a magnificent hunting scene.

In-Depth Commentary

Ye Mengde sets this *ci* against Frost’s Descent. The first stanza writes the vastness of the autumn landscape and the emergence of cold. “霜降碧天静” describes the broad atmosphere of Frost’s Descent, when the autumn sky is crystalline and Heaven and Earth seem utterly still. The three characters “碧天静”, “blue sky, still,” are extremely concise yet rich in resonance. “秋事促西风” uses the character “促”, “hasten,” to personify the invisible west wind, as though it were urging all autumnal affairs toward completion. “寒声隐地初听” writes the first faint sound of cold emerging from beneath the earth, while “中夜入梧桐” describes that sound entering the parasol leaves in the middle of the night. Parasol leaves are broad and crisp, sounding clearly when wind passes through them, and were an important medium through which ancient poets perceived the voice of autumn. “起瞰高城回望” gives the posture of climbing high and looking into the distance, while “寥落关河千里” writes a thousand li of mountains and rivers lying sparse and desolate in autumn. Although the second stanza is not quoted in full, “飞骑引雕弓” already reveals that even amid autumnal melancholy, the poet retains a vigorous and heroic spirit. The lyric maintains a distinctly Song-dynasty tension between desolation and boldness.
