Grain Buds

「最爱垄头麦,迎风笑落红。」

Solar Term Begins: 2027-05-20 – 2027-05-22
Grain Buds is the season when the grains of wheat and other summer crops are beginning to fill, though they have not yet reached full ripeness. Rainfall increases, and rivers and streams gradually swell. To be nearly full, yet not completely so, is…
Temperature Trends
Summer heat intensifying

Temperatures continue to rise across most of China. Average temperatures in North China and the Huang–Huai region climb to around 22–26°C, while Jiangnan and South China generally exceed 25°C. Some areas experience high-temperature weather, and the difference between day and night temperatures narrows further.

Precipitation Patterns
Flooded south, drought-stricken north

Jiangnan and South China enter a period of concentrated rainfall, while the early flood season in South China reaches its height and heavy rain becomes frequent in many places. North China and the Huang–Huai region still receive relatively little precipitation, and drought conditions persist or intensify in some areas.

一
Sow Thistles Flourish

Bitter greens, a type of wild edible plant, flourish along fields and paths. Their abundant green leaves and scattered yellow flowers become one of the most representative rural phenological sights of Grain Buds.

二
Delicate Grasses Wither

Fine, soft grasses that prefer shade gradually wither as yang qi grows stronger and sunlight intensifies, marking the full transition of nature’s yin-yang balance toward the predominance of yang.

三
The season of ripening wheat arrives

Although it is summer, for wheat this is already its “autumn”, the season of maturity. The ears grow plump, wheat fields turn golden, and the opening of the summer harvest draws near.

「小满」

[Song Dynasty] · Ouyang Xiu

夜莺啼绿柳,皓月醒长空。

最爱垄头麦,迎风笑落红。

Modern Translation

At night, orioles sing among the green willow branches, while a bright moon illuminates the vast sky. What I love most is the wheat along the field ridges, gently swaying in the wind as though laughing at the fallen spring blossoms.

In-Depth Commentary

This five-character quatrain captures the distinctive seasonal beauty of Lesser Fullness. The first two lines describe the night scene: “夜莺啼绿柳” appeals to hearing, while “皓月醒长空” appeals to sight. The character “醒” is especially vivid: the clear moonlight seems to awaken the entire sky from sleep. The final two lines mark the poem’s turn and elevation. “最爱垄头麦” directly expresses the poet’s feeling—rather than writing of flowers or moonlight, he chooses the wheat in the fields, revealing his attention to agricultural life. The final “迎风笑落红” is the poetic eye of the whole poem. The wheat is personified: the ears swaying in the wind become a smile, and what they smile at is the fallen “red” of spring blossoms. This smile carries deeper meaning. The fading of spring flowers need not be mourned, because summer wheat is growing vigorously; grains approaching fullness possess a vitality greater than that of fallen blossoms.
