The Torch Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals of the Yi, Bai, Naxi, Jino, Lahu, and other ethnic groups, and is widely known as the “Carnival of the East.” Around the twenty-fourth day of the sixth lunar month each year, people light torches, drive away insects, and pray for good harvests, using brilliant flames to convey their hopes for light and abundance.

In 2006, the Torch Festival was included in the first national list of intangible cultural heritage.

As Chinese culture has reached an increasingly global audience, the Torch Festival has gradually become an important vehicle for cultural exchange between China and the wider world. In 2024, the inaugural UK Yunnan Culture Festival brought the Torch Festival to Camden Market in London, where visitors from around the world experienced this vibrant Eastern celebration together. In 2026, photographs from the Shilin Torch Festival appeared in Britain’s *The Times* and Brazil’s *South America Overseas Chinese News*, carrying the festival’s fiery energy and joy onto the international stage. The Chinese ambassador to the United States also introduced the Torch Festival to global audiences through social media.
