The Qixi Festival, also known as the Qiqiao Festival (乞巧节), Qiqiao Festival (七巧节), or Daughters’ Festival, is one of China’s most romantic traditional festivals. It falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month and originated in the worship of celestial constellations, while carrying the beautiful legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl.

Yet love is not the festival’s only traditional theme. Historically, women prayed to the Weaver Girl on this day for intelligence and skillful hands. As the legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl spread widely, Qixi acquired an increasingly pronounced romantic character.

In 2006, the Qixi Festival was included in the first batch of China’s national intangible cultural heritage list. Every year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, activities such as qiqiao rituals and prayers, collective weddings, intangible cultural heritage markets, and river-lantern wishing ceremonies unfold across the country, offering visitors a chance to experience the unique beauty of Chinese romance within a tradition spanning a thousand years.
